Recently, the fine folks over at the IBM wrote a blog titled, “Top Five Advantages of Software as a Service (SaaS)”. The writer, Marcos Sylos, defined the top five benefits of SaaS as being:

  1. Reduced Time to Benefit
  2. Lower Costs
  3. Scalability and Integration
  4. New Releases (Upgrades)
  5. Easy to Use and Perform Proof of Concepts

Now, while these are all true, we believe the IBM Cloud blog missed some additional key benefits of SaaS solutions. Below is our additions to their list.

Accessibility

The Benefits of SaaS

When it comes to SaaS applications, one of the largest benefits of the Cloud based solution is global access across a wide variety of devices. This is to say, with SaaS users can connect to the solution via a stationary or mobile device with a solid Internet connection. Unlike their hard copy brethern which are only accessible on the machine which they are installed upon, SaaS solutoins allow users to take the software with them on the go and utilize it from anywhere in the world.

Resilience

Resilience in SaaS, the Cloud and web hosting at large is known by a few different names – data redundancy, fail safe Cloud storage, instant data replication, fault tolerant geographically diverse data centers – just to name a few. What resilience really means is the ability of your rented SaaS solution to stay up and running even when your local business is down or the weather around your physical location threatens to zap the power supply in the area. Resilience means your SaaS solution is up and running, due to the data center technology powering it, even when a hurricane is hitting your area with devastating impact.

Ultra High Adoption Rates

Ultra high adoption rates. SaaS benefits from ultra high adoption rates due to the avenue upon which they are reached – the Internet. Most people these days know how to use the Internet and they understand what they can utilize it for. Being that SaaS applications are reached, delivered and used through the Internet, SaaS applications tend to have a high rate of adoption even among those who might not know how to use them.

Defined Spend

Along with ease of access, SaaS operates on a defined spend per month basis. In most cases, SaaS providers will charge SaaS users per seat. This means every month, as a company you know the exact financial figure you are going to spend on your SaaS solution. More to the point, knowing what you are spending on critical SaaS solutions means knowing how you can use other funds in your budget.

The New List

There you have it. Nine points of benefit, not five. So what are the benefits of the SaaS solution model?

  1. Reduced Time to Benefit
  2. Lower Costs
  3. Scalability and Integration
  4. New Releases (Upgrades)
  5. Easy to Use and Perform Proof of Concepts
  6. Accessibility
  7. Resilience
  8. Ultra High Adoption Rates
  9. Defined Spend

How does this list sound to IBM Cloud and you Mr. Sylos? Do you agree?
